Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ORF visits Kulmasa, Northern Ghana

Below you can find a link to coverage by ORF, the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, of the Medical Missions Sisters’ exciting integrated healthcare programme in Kulmasa, Northern Ghana.

The report was made by Zoran Dobrić when he accompanied Reinhard Heiserer and the team from Jugend Eine Welt to visit our new programme in Kulmasa in May 2022.

"Just take a look at the kids here: They are our future! But if I didn't personally come to help - these children would be lost to this world," says Ghanaian doctor, Dan-Beck Powell, who recently joined MMS’ public health team. Once a month, he examines newborns, children and adults in the villages near the town of Kulmasa in Northern Ghana.  There is no hospital within a radius of more than a hundred kilometres. This leads to high mortality rates among infants. The Savannah Region in the north of the country is particularly hard hit and underserved; almost all births here take place at home.

Newborns often die from complications and the mortality rate among expectant mothers is also high. Among those newborns, who survive, many are born with physical disabilities or mental impairment. Maternal hunger and malnutrition play a significant role in this.

Three of our Medical Mission Sisters have now taken the initiative in Kulmasa: they have decided to find funds to build a family clinic for the benefit of mothers and their newborns and the Austrian aid organisation, Jugend Eine Welt, is supporting them.
